County Redistricting

As I noted in an earlier post, redistricting is gaining a bit of traction as a state-wide story.   Milam County Commissioners are also engaged in the process.

The county has posted proposed new precinct boundaries on its new Website in easy-to-download PFD form. You can find links to all of the proposed local maps here.

I’ve looked at them. Judge Barkemeyer and Commissioners George Tomek and Jeff Muggee have asked my opinion of them and, at least in principle, I see no problem with them. In fact, there is a lot to recommend the proposal.

In their calculus, commissioners must balance population shifts since 2000, minority representation and miles of roads. This proposal seems to meet these tests while reducing the starkly gerrymandered-looking nature of the previous map. In particular, precinct boundaries in Cameron and in southeast Rockdale appear much cleaner.

So, please take a look at these maps and share your comments with me!
